Empowering Clean Energy Through Data Standardization

OB Alliance Inc. was established to foster commonality and interoperability in clean energy technologies (CET) such as solar, energy storage, EV charging, and other renewable resources.
We are dedicated to streamlining data, permitting, and lifecycle management processes to advance the clean energy transition. Through standards and open-source frameworks, OB Alliance reduces soft costs, expedites approvals, and makes CET more accessible to communities nationwide.

Our Origins

OB Alliance is rooted in the pioneering efforts of the Orange Button Initiative, originally launched by the SunSpec Alliance in 2016 in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE). With a funding boost of $4 million from the U.S. DOE, the Orange Button Initiative aimed to address critical inefficiencies and high costs associated with the data management and permitting processes in the solar industry. The initiative introduced a unified data standard to streamline operations, reduce errors, and enhance interoperability across diverse systems in the distributed energy resources (DER) landscape.

Our Role in the Industry

Data Standardization: We develop open standards to ensure consistent, high-quality data for the CET sector, improving interoperability between manufacturers, installers, and regulatory bodies.
Data interoperability inspired by XBRL: Plug and Play with globally recognized financial reporting platforms, including common terms, units, timestamps.
Open-Source Tools: As advocates of open-source solutions, we offer tools and frameworks that democratize access to high-quality CET data, enabling organizations to adopt these standards without prohibitive costs.
Permitting Optimization: Through our collaboration with Product Registry and the AHJ Registry, OB Alliance works to minimize project permitting timelines. This reduces the average approval time from over 27 days to less than two hours in participating regions, accelerating the adoption of clean energy infrastructure.
